WORK WEEK SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday (weekends and on call, as needed) 

Rotate working either: 5:30am-2:30pm, 7:00am-4:00pm or 9:00-6:00pm

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs complex duties in the operation, repair and maintenance of school buses in the transportation program. Correctly diagnosis’ and repairs school bus engines, ensuring prompt return to service. Completes required reports to capture all labor, parts and materials expended while performing inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs in maintenance software. Ensures resource efficiency. Provides guidance and support/assistance to other mechanics.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  • Extensive knowledge of heavy duty diesel engines and repair techniques and methods;

  • Extensive knowledge of maintenance software;

  • Considerable knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards;

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel; Google Apps;

  • Ability to make decisions regarding the maintenance, diagnosis of mechanical problems, and the repair of school buses with minimal supervision;

  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems by experience;

  • Ability to utilize diagnostic tools to determine how to appropriately and efficiently make repairs to school buses;

  • Ability to communicate repair methods and solutions with management and peers;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, contractors, vendors, and external agencies.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or equivalent; AND

  • Five years of progressive experience repairing diesel engines.

 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must hold and maintain a valid commercial driver’s license according to the State of NC requirements;

  • Within twelve months of employment complete safety training according to OSHA standards;

  • Must obtain and hold a NC DPI 30-day inspector license.​



PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of North Carolina Department of Instruction (NCDPI) regulations pertaining to school buses and transportation;

  • The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs complex work in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of school buses, determines extent and type of repair needed, and estimates cost of repairs.

  2. Oversees the work and workflow of field mechanics.

  3. Orders parts and accessories for the repair of school buses, enters work orders into software system used by the district, maintains shop tools and equipment, and ensures and maintains shop in a safe and orderly condition.

  4. Assists management to ensure repair practices are current with industry standards and state law.

  5. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position operates in a bus facility garage bay area in non-conditioned air susceptible to exhaust fumes and noise. Must be able to use a variety of bus maintenance repair equipment such as power tools, lifts, computers and other equipment associated with bus repairs. Work duties are performed outside in the weather conditions. Must be able to perform work requiring the use of a crawler. Must be able to perform work requiring the use of a creeper. Work is considered very heavy physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community.
