POSITION PURPOSE:
Supports students with disabilities by ensuring equitable access to curriculum, communication, and learning environments through the effective use of assistive technology (AT). Provides expertise in evaluating student needs, recommending appropriate tools and strategies, and developing individualized implementation plans in collaboration with IEP teams. Delivers training, consultation, and ongoing support to staff, students, and families, ensuring that assistive technology is integrated into daily instruction and aligned with state and federal regulations, including IDEA. Increases student independence, participation, and achievement across educational settings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Considerable knowledge of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) supports, systems, and strategies;
- Considerable knowledge of early language and communication development;
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point; Google Apps;
- Knowledge of the developmental stages of written expression;
- Knowledge of the K–12 Common Core State Standards and North Carolina Extended Content Standards;
- Knowledge of the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL);
- Knowledge of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process and special education compliance requirements;
- Strong organizational skills, including documentation, record keeping, and equipment management;
- Ability to collaborate effectively with IEP teams, families, and service providers;
- Ability to plan, design, and deliver professional development and training for educators, staff, and families;
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team;
- Ability to travel to and work across multiple school sites within the district;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, attorneys, parents, and the public.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Master's degree obtained from an approved program in Speech-Language Pathology;
- Three years of experience working with student with complex communication needs;
- Experience with assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA);
- Licensed by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists (NCBOESLPA);
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record according to the State of NC requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with students with complex communication and physical challenges;
- Experience working with students with learning disabilities;
- Experience with the IEP process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follows all rules, policies, and procedures of WCPSS, along with state and federal regulations, including IDEA.
- Conducts collaborative assistive technology (AT) to address students' communication, learning, and physical needs.
- Writes comprehensive evaluation reports, maintains student documentation, and follows IEP compliance procedures.
- Maintains accurate records of equipment inventory.
- Collaboratively develops AAC and AT implementation plans that guide the process of introducing, using, and monitoring the effectiveness of AT tools and strategies.
- Designs and delivers AAC and AT training, in-services, and professional development.
- Provides consultation, training, and ongoing support to special and general educators, instructional assistants, related service providers, families, and other service providers to support effective implementation of AAC and AT systems and strategies.
- Conducts classroom consultations to assist teachers in integrating AAC supports and strategies into daily routines and instruction, fostering a communication- and language-rich classroom environment.
- Assists IEP teams with developing present levels of performance, goals, accommodations, and appropriately reflecting AT within the IEP.
- Participates in IEP meetings for students who require AAC and AT supports for the purpose of developing an appropriate IEP.
- Collaborates as an effective member of the AT Team to discuss and develop processes, procedures, and responsibilities in response to district and department needs.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automobile equipment.
