POSITION PURPOSE:
Responsible for the programming of Wake County Public School System’s (WCPSS) Building Automation Systems (BAS). Supports new installations, changes and modifications to current systems, and supports effective operation of all facilities. Performs highly skilled technical work involving maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of BAS and Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Extensive knowledge of BAS, HVAC systems, networking equipment, electrical equipment, and fixtures;
- Extensive knowledge of computers, hardware, software, and BAS programming languages;
- Considerable knowledge of Information Technology Networking protocols including Lon, Bacnet, Modbus, and TCPIP;
- Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards;
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills;
- Ability to work independently and part of a team and complete tasks in the absence of clear direction;
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform maintenance and software repairs on building automation systems;
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical, and electrical drawings, and diagrams;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Associates or two-year degree from a regionally accredited college or university in related field;
- Eight years of directly related experience in the field of Building Automation and Control Energy Management, and HVAC systems of large-scale multi-building campuses;
- Five years of experience programming and working with DDC systems;
- Must have experience in open protocol software such as BACnet or Lon Works;
- Must have experience with Web based interface preferably Tridium’s N4 and/or AX system architecture;
- Must be familiar with HTML/XML and other internet protocols such as TCP/IP and HTTP;
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively perform the position may be considered.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors or four-year degree from a regionally accredited college or university in related field;
- Certification in Lon-Works, BACnet, Tridium R2 and/or AX/N4 architecture;
- Experience with Honeywell, Schneider, JCI, Trane, and other building automation software.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manages BAS database(s), including program review, system updates, and troubleshooting of software.
- Performs new site integration insuring communication with systems supervisors and calendars.
- Support and maintain all aspects of AX and N4 platforms, calendars, and associated web pages.
- Trains energy management staff in the use and operation of BAS systems.
- Manage and maintain all user information and password access to BAS systems and components.
- Evaluates the infrastructure and building systems by assessing the technical conditions, evaluating repair and replacement options, and providing future planning, programming of repairs, and improvements.
- Reviews and inspects capital improvement projects related to building automation systems with respect to budget, maintainability, reliability, and consistency with the WCPSS design guidelines.
- Interfaces with IT group and ensures that BAS systems are secure, backed up, and maintained.
- Maintains technical records, files, and equipment for assigned areas.
- Ensures staff adheres to district policies and procedures.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in an indoor and outdoor environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, hand/power tools, etc. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, contractors, vendors and staff members of external agencies. Work is considered heavy physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. The work requires the ability to operate automotive equipment. Frequent exposure to hazardous materials, gases, and chemicals, moving parts, and inclement weather conditions.
