WORK WEEK SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday (occasional evenings and weekends) Start and end time varies depending on work schedule;

Required to respond to after-hour emergency calls and inclement weather calls. 

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

Manages the position and work of custodial employees and work teams. Provides supervision and overall coordination/inspection of work of personnel, contractors, and vendors to ensure compliance with project and safety specifications and regulations. Performs work associated with developing, administering, and managing all aspects of custodial activities for facilities. Arranges/schedules work, as well as corrective, preventive, and routine custodial duties to ensure continuous operations. Plans, develops, and implements new methods and procedures to improve operations, minimize costs and increase effective use of labor and materials.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  • Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in custodial work;

  • Considerable knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials;

  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel; internet and WCPSS intranet; Google Apps; electronic work order system; electronic supply ordering system; email;

  • Ability to supervise and work effectively with others;

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments;

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;

  • Ability to attend and successfully complete required employee trainings provided by Wake County Public School System (WCPSS);

  • Ability to ensure assigned work orders are completed by custodians;

  • Ability to use all assigned equipment in a safe manner per manufacturer’s specifications;

  • Ability to learn and consistently follow safety precautions;

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, contractors, parents, and students.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND

  • Two years of directly related experience; AND

  • Demonstrated successful supervisory or leadership experience; AND

  • Required WCPSS trainings which will be provided post-employment.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience performing custodial work in a commercial/school setting;

  • Supervisory experience in a custodial related role in a commercial/school setting.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manages the position and work of custodial employees and work teams.

  2. Provides supervision and overall coordination/inspection of work of personnel, contractors, and vendors to ensure compliance with project and safety specifications and regulations.

  3. Performs work associated with developing, administering and managing all aspects of custodial activities for facilities.

  4. Schedules work, as well as corrective, preventive, and routine custodial duties to ensure continuous operations.

  5. Plans, develops, and implements new methods and procedures to improve operations, minimize costs and increase effective use of labor and materials.

  6. Provides job coaching and directs training to improve individual’s performance (e.g., training on policies and procedures, sanitary and safety regulations, and performs cost estimates, inventory, and requisitions of tools, equipment, materials, and supplies to maintain efficient operations.

  7. Inspects work, maintains computer records, and reviews material safety data sheets, regulations, specifications, and the most updated industry practices.

  8. Responsible for procedure compliance and adherence to all safety procedures, required safety training as specified in the Safety Manual, occupational health practices, and establishing a safe work environment.

  9. Responsible for receiving, informing, and giving information in a timely manner related to issues such as safe work practices, work schedules or delays, wasted resources, errors not readily apparent or easy to detect, non-compliance to procedures, and work processes or procedures that could improve performance or reduce cost.

  10. Responds to facilities for emergencies, health hazards, weather related incidents, etc.

  11. Performs other related duties, as assigned (including temporary work at different assigned site).

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work for this position involves pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, climbing ladders, maneuvering in confined spaces, and prolonged standing and walking. Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet extracting machine, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, contractors, students, parents, and community members that might use school facilities. Work is considered medium physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures and smells commonly associated with schools in general. Some work will be outdoor work, potentially in inclement weather.
