WORK WEEK SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday (occasional evenings and weekends) Position is available for a Hybrid Telework workweek 

 

POSITION PURPOSE:

Leads claim management process from inception to completion, (enters loss reports in database, obtains official reports, obtains estimates of damage, recovers amount of damage from the party responsible for damages, and obtains payment from third-party administrator when appropriate).  Analyzes loss data and makes recommendations for reducing exposure to losses. Develops and communicates risk procedures for school and central services staff. Ensures that all applicable state and federal laws related to workplace safety are followed and that other safety initiatives in the school environment are specifically aimed at reducing the school district’s risk. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

  • Extensive knowledge of public laws and school district policies, regulations, practices, and procedures; ability to understand and explain laws, regulations and procedures;

  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, and Power Point; Google Apps; Business or Claims applications;

  • Considerable knowledge of industry claims management standards, actions, claim investigation, processing and procedures, considerable knowledge of principle and procedures for the investigation and processing of insurance claims;

  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a team environment and independent; interact with all levels of staff and management with diplomacy and tact;

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;

  • Ability to accurately read, interpret, and comply with Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) departmental procedures;

  • Ability to be primary department contact to develop and deliver effective training, presentations, and communication to a variety of audiences to both internal and external stakeholders;

  • Ability to have sensitivity to legal responsibilities regarding matters of a sensitive or confidential nature;

  • Ability to work well and value team environment that values an open exchange idea;

  • Ability to document information and prepare accurate and concise written reports; develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures;

  • Ability to conduct problem analyses and make recommendations;

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, attorney’s, parents, and the public. 

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in risk management, public/business/finance administration, or related field;

  • Five years of experience in risk management, business/finance administration, public administration, or related field; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position may be considered.

 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to complete the Occupational Safety and Health Administrator (OSHA) General Industry Regulation Fire and Life Safety, Accident Investigation training;

  • Completion of OSHA General Industry 10 hour or 30-hour course;

  • Experience in Risk Management and Insurance, Public School Administration, or related field;

  • Experience in delivering professional development in person and virtually.

  • Experience in Oracle systems and/or claims processing;

  • North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI) Adjuster’s License;

  • Certified School Risk Manager (CSRM) certification. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manages risk management and insurance services, including analyzing insurance needs and preparing departmental documentation for renewal applications.  

  2. Manages and analyzes data feed and maintain electronic records in the departments database, for annual, quarterly and monthly reports.

  3. Schedules and creates agendas for all annual bi-annual, quarterly and monthly departmental, school based and committee meetings.

  4. Provides leadership for the Safety and Health Leadership Team (Steering Committee); assists to implement system-wide school safety, injury, loss prevention program in accordance with Board Policies 1510/4200/7270 (School Safety) and 4201/7271 (Injury/Loss Prevention). Coordinates with Fire and Life and Occupational Health and Safety personnel with safety/employee risk and safety/loss prevention committee.

  5. Oversees all department documents on Wake Connect website and internal documents electronic and hard copy files and ensure stakeholder communication of processes

  6. Facilitates training for school administrative and central services staff.

  7. Implements short and long-range organizational objectives and procedures, monitors effectiveness.

  8. Leads WCPSS auto self-insured retention/deductible insurance program, including claims intake, investigation, communication with WCPSS staff and external partners. Includes direct consultation with adjusters to determine pre-settlement limits. Responsible for administration of claims protocols coordination, and communication of loss cause, frequency and severity to the Senior Director. 

  9. Oversees schedule of fleet vehicles added to current auto insurance policies.

  10. Assists Senior Director with self-insured general liability program. Meets with insurance brokers, loss control personnel, consultants to review trends and develop strategic initiatives. Prepares and maintains correspondence, reports, records and files related to risk management and safety loss control. 

  11. Lead school contact for prohibited student activities list and provides guidance to schools. 

  12. Performs other related, duties as assigned.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, staff members of external funding agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to ten pounds of force.
